If you’ve married a man in uniform and don’t know how to drape a saree, girl, you might be in for a wild ride! No matter the occasion, sarees are the go-to dress code for ladies in the Army. Remember, the Indian Army is a male-dominated workspace where women are deeply respected, so it’s only fitting that you present yourself with equal grace at every formal or informal event. Your saree should be well-pressed and perfectly matched to complement your husband’s distinguished aura as you stroll beside him, hand in hand.

Tip: No worries! Even the wives of Generals struggle with sarees—they’re known to change into five different sarees in a single day. Everyone pitches in to help, but the real treat is having your fauji by your side, assisting you with those tricky pleats!

The epic ladies meet

Welcome to the fairyland of Army life! As a new Army wife stepping into this vibrant tribe, you might find yourself slightly overwhelmed by gatherings of hundreds of OG Army wives. Think of these Army ladies’ meet-ups as a more formal version of your mom’s kitty parties, where the high-ranking ladies mingle with every other lady in the formation in a surprisingly relaxed (read: informal) setting.

Tip: If you’re the guest, enjoy every moment! Expect the finest sarees, impeccable manners, a top-notch crowd, and yes—the best food the Army has to offer. It’s a taste of the high life, Army style!

The iconic Welfare programs

Welfare programs in the Army come in all shapes and sizes! From visiting jawans’ families to check on their well-being and congratulating them on new babies, to zipping over to VTC centers for skill development, nursery teacher training, or even sprucing up canteens, beauty parlors, and swimming pools. You might also find yourself organizing sports events for Army kids, or special events for disabled children and veer naris.

The crown jewel of these welfare activities is the monthly welfare program, where everyone gathers under one roof, no matter their husband’s rank. It’s a bit like a mega ladies’ meet, but with a twist: here, officer’s wives mingle with jawans’ and JCOs’ wives.

I remember the then DG Artillery, Lt Gen Anjan Mukherjee, sharing a gem of wisdom with me as a young bride. He said the idea behind these programs is to forge strong bonds between Army wives. That way, when the men head off to war, the wives can unite as one formidable force, looking after their children and staying mentally strong. These emotional connections are the secret ingredient to that strength, nurtured through the camaraderie built at such gatherings.

Tandem Jumps

I would strongly recommend taking a Tandem jump with an experienced instructor before commencing any skydiving course. Skydiving is a sport and just like any other sport in the world, it is not necessary that you would like it. Frankly, the moment I jumped out of the aircraft for my first jump I realised I did not like the sport. Taking a tandem jump first(where you are tied to an instructor’s body) will not only save you millions of rupees but also a lot of hassle.

AFF (Accelerated Free Fall ) course

To become a skydiver one needs to complete an A license which is 17 jumps out of the aircraft after the AFF course which is 8 jumps out of the aircraft. Now here, it is of utmost importance to know the difference between AFF and A license to safeguard your interests. Some agents through which you are likely to go to foreign countries might not share it. Like happened in my case, most of them might not tell you that the best is to enrol only for the AFF course initially and upgrade it to an A license course if you successfully complete the AFF course. This approach of only enrolling into an AFF course would save you almost half of your money.

A License

Once you successfully complete the AFF course you move to A license to complete the rest of 17 jumps to become a skydiver. Now there is so much difference between AFF and A license jumps. Every day is a new learning while your ‘flight and fright’ mode is on. Be it AFF or A license you need an absolute level of mental and physical fitness to clear the AFF course and if you dont have a good fitness level or you are obese I would suggest not taking up the sport.

Skydiving is just like a car driving in the air. It is just that instead of a car you will have a parachute to steer left, right, and centre to land at the landing area. While a lot of people say they find free fall difficult it was landing with the parachute that scared me. Here, it is of utmost importance that you hire the right team to fulfil your skydiving dreams.

The right people will always encourage you to take the tandem first, then suggest you to take AFF only and upgrade it to A license if you could complete AFF. Most importantly they will brief you nicely about repeat Jumps and other risks involved. If not, they are only focussed on the money they will make out of you. Remember at the end, it is not just an extreme sport but also a rich man’s sport.

Repeat Jumps

Even though the average cost of AFF- A license is approximately 4 lakh rupees around the world, the actual cost on the ground to do skydiving may range from 6 lakh to even 10-15 lakh rupees. This cost will depend on the number of ‘repeat jumps’ you will take during the course. Almost everyone is bound to do the repeat jumps. When in the course you need to pass level 1 to reach level 2 to reach level 3 and so on to finally clear 8 jumps for the Accelerated free fall course and eventually A license. Now there is a high chance of failing every level and doing the repeat jumps because even if you commit one mistake in the air during free fall (maybe one wrong hand movement or flat legs) your instructor will fail you for your safety and recommend you repeat jumps.

Risks involved

I was told by my agent ‘that _{while there is danger even crossing the road, skydiving is the safest sport in the world and it is an easy breezy sport. You come over and we will see.}‘ I would strongly suggest you not to fall for such statements. When I reached the Thailand a lot of people told me about various accidents which have happened in the past including one student getting flipped over during a free fall. There is a reason why skydiving is tagged as an extreme-risk sport. My tandem instructor gave me a clear picture and I am quoting here

As I mentioned skydiving is just like the car driving in the air. Remember how you don’t learn to drive in a day and it takes months to properly drive the car and you are prone to accidents, the same is true with sky diving it is just that in the air there is no margin to error. One smallest of wrong steering or wrong judgment and you can end up being a cripple if nothing. Saying that a lot of people make skydiving possible as well… the answer lies in why do you want to skydive? The answer should not be because you saw soldiers jumping off the plane or someone said you should try it. Also, ask yourself, are you a gutsy person? It is not easy to jump off that kind of void up high. It needs a certain level of courage.

Skydiving Agents in India

A few things you must check before selecting your skydiving agents

1. Has he briefed you correctly about the difference between the tandem, AFF and A license? Had he briefed you about repeat jumps? If any of the answers are no, run away!
2. Remember connecting with the drop zones (skydiving centers ) directly would always be cheaper as individual agents make money out of you and extract their commision out of your money only
3. If there is any other cost involved the agent must brief you about that too. In my case, the agent demanded 7700 Thai baths (18000 rs approx) as the administrative cost which was basically the transportation cost to the sky diving centre for 21 days. 18000 rs just for transportation in a cheap country like Thailand (or any country in that manner) was an audacious price but since I had just landed in a foreign country I had no option but to comply with whatever he asked me for. He in fact charged the same amount from two other students with me basically we paid 50000 Rs in total as unaccounted cost.
4. Always make online transactions while transferring that kind of money, not only it will give you proof of money but also transacting cash in a foreign country through a forex card results in extra tax. I remember paying 5000 Rs extra just in tax for taking cash out of the ATM.
5. If anyone tells you they are a legend in the world of skydiving, especially in India they are just boasting. Skydiving is a vast sport and there is no dearth of how many thousands of jumps you need to take just to be relevant. In India, we still have a long way to go.

Quitting the course in between

Quitting the Aff- A license course in between is a high probability. Not that it is a rich man’s sport and you need a fat bank account to complete the course it is also taxing. You also lose a lot of weight. There could also be other physical complications like nausea or nose bleeding depending on your body type. There is also extensive ground training that you need to go through to develop muscle memory and your mind would always be in ‘fright and flight’ mode and there is a lot of theoretical syllabus you need to study too. Quitting the course along with repeat jumps are high probability. Here, I would suggest not doing the course under anyone’s pressure but listening to your heart. Remember you dont have to prove anything to anyone. Secondly, don’t give all your money at once, pay money step-wise for every jump.

Returning of Advance in case of quitting the course in between

It is such a less talked-about aspect of skydiving. Most DZ and agents would deduct 30% or may even keep the entire advance in case you choose to quit the course. In my case, I was not briefed about this policy by my agent whom I depended on for my course and later when I decided to quit he almost kept Rs 1 Lakh citing company policy. He even stated that it was written on his skydiving website and It was my responsibility to read that. Later he opened the bottom-most of his website clicked on the ‘_{^{terms and conditions’}} written in the smallest of fonts and scrolled through the 4-5th paragraph to show the clause. Always ask about the return policy before you hand over all your money to them, remember chances are agents already know most would quit the course and look forward to the extra cut.

Vertical Wind Tunnel

When you embark on a journey of skydiving I would suggest, you take a tandem first and then try Vertical Wind tunnel training for 2 hours and then leave for your sky diving course abroad. In India, till now there are 3 VWTs two are with the Indian military and one GravityZip Hyderabad is open for all.

The end result of skydiving

All those people who take up skydiving do it mostly for these reasons

1. The military paratroopers jump for their nation and it is part of their job. In India, military para trooping has a long way to go and facilities like vertical wind tunnels etc have come up recently. It is easier to paratroop in the military relative to civil because you can focus only on the jumps not on the atrocious expenses. The military aircraft is free of cost and then there is no concept of paying for repeat jumps in the military. Also, the same courses in the military last over weeks unlike 21 days in civil which makes it pressurising. Still, it takes years to create one military paratrooper.
2. The skydivers in civil do it to establish a career in civilian drop zones across the world. All those tandem instructors who jump with tourists are qualified skydiving professionals and have reached that stage after taking thousands of jumps and many skydiving ratings of skydiving instructors like AFF I or coach etc.
3. You dont become a tourist jumper in a day. It is the hard work and passion lasting over the years. Also, the kind of money they had invested is unimaginable.
4. Some adventure enthusiasts like me do it for the feeling of adrenaline. I also wanted to do it because I am an author and write about the Indian Army. So I wanted to feel this technical and rigorous sport for authentic writing as almost every second protagonist of mine is a paratrooper.

What is your purpose? Be absolutely clear about it, it will save you a lot of trouble. Going to the moon is also fancy but should we do it just for that?

Once I returned from my sky diving stint I pondered whether I could have avoided all these hassles afterall I had made immense efforts just to reach Thailand but then I realised we have little awareness around skydiving or paratrooping. Many men and women in India want to experience it and perhaps my doing the course would provide them a different aspect. If my article liberates even one of you from all biases and helps you ‘pick the sport or not pick the sport‘ with an open heart I would feel the purpose of writing this has been fruitful.

The book starts with a brief description on history legacy and origin of Parachute regiment and para Special forces in India. THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT of the Indian Army is primarily an airborne regiment, specializing in parachute operations and quick deployment behind enemy lines. It is an arm of the infantry forces while Special forces are an arm of Parachute regiment, a relatively small military units raised and trained for reconnaissance, unconventional warfare and special operations. These exclusive units rely on stealth, speed, self-reliance and close teamwork, as well as highly specialized equipment. Traditionally, the mission of the SF are in five areas: counterterrorism, unconventional warfare, facilitating the internal defence of foreign countries, special reconnaissance and direct action against specific targets. This highlights the difference between both Paratroopers and Special forces operatives.

Then the stories of the legendary one of its kind book on Special Forces begin. A book on Indian Special Forces was much awaited. While we had accounts of individual heroism of Para Special Forces officers and soldiers in India this is for the first time that an entire book is written exclusively on the heroes from the Para SF from most iconic and legendary battalions; 9 Para SF, 21 Para SF and 4 Para SF.

The author says that it is her attempt to give real superheroes to people. Why follow the ideals of Superman or Captain America when we have our own real superheroes in India.

The first story is based on the life of Col Santosh Mahadik titled as ‘Commando who lived and died for the nation’ The story narrates the tales from his childhood ,his probation period and how his military career was launched from Kargil war. His exceptional qualities as a combat underwater diver and his thrilling operations. His family life his wife Captain Swati Mahadik, his children Kartikee and Swaraj had also been featured most beautifully. The last plots when Col Santosh Mahadik makes supreme sacrifice moisten the eyes.

The next story in the Balidan features Brigadier Saurabh Singh Shekhawat The author Swapnil Pandey has aptly titled his story as The man, The myth and The legend. The story shares the anecdotes from his childhood in Rajasthan, narrated by his family and childhood friends. The story also talks a lot about his academy days in IMA when he rolled and was punished maharaja style to when he ran on the whistles of his ustads. The author also narrates the anecdotes shared by his famous close friend and coursemate Major Guarav Arya (retd) who mentions how Shekhu had always been a fitness freak. The author takes forward the story of Brig S.S. Shekhawat through his probation days and also features his famous operations in which he had earned medals and awards. His family life had also been revealed for the first time and mentions the courage sacrifice and resilience of his wife Mrs Renuka Rathore, his mother Dr Shraddha Chauhan and his father Dr Jaswant Singh Shekhawat in order to support every endeavor the legendary Para Special Forces officer Brig Shekhawat had ever taken on. Great many anecdotes from his mountaineering expeditions and adventures of Paratrooping had also been written nicely. The only first hand authentic account on the life and endeavors of Brigadier Saurabh Singh Shekhawat can be read in Balidan.

The next story is the first hand authentic account of Subedar Major Mahendra Singh who is considered a revered figure in 9 Para Special Forces. The title in the book is highlights his stature in the unit ‘The great mountain of 9 Para SF.’ His life from the rural hinterland of Rajasthan where he grows amidst extreme poverty to rise to become one of the greatest Para Special forces Operatives of all times is inspiring . His recruitment process through which he joins Indian Army and eventually joins Special Forces is also insightful and gives youngsters a great insight on how to join Special Forces and become a Paratrooper. Then his thrilling operations since the time of rise of terrorism in Kashmir to the time when he got shot in his spine during Operation Sutsalyar in which he also lost his beloved Lance Naik Mohan Nath Goswami and the pain of losing him has also been narrated in the book. The writer Swapnil Pandey also mentions about his simple family filled with love and how his daughter today has taken forward the legacy of Mahendra Saab by joining Indian Army. The story also gives an authentic account on the life and job profile of a Paratrooper in Special Forces. The daring slithering helicopter exercises make interesting par of the story.

Then the next story ‘The Enigma Who Went Too Soon’ is based on the life of iconic Special forces officer Captain Tushar Mahajan from 9 Para SF. This one is the thrilling tale of valour beyond measure of the 23 year old youngsters who made supreme sacrifice for mother India. He was perhaps one of the best covert operatives India ever had. With his Dogri looks from jammu and Kashmir and multi linguistic abilities with complete proficiency on Balti language which is spoken in Gilgit Baltistan Tibet region, to Urdu Arabaic, Dogri along with his lethal weaponry skills trained by the best of ghosts from 9 Para (SF) made him invincible. Unlike most SF operatives who prefer to use Tavor Tar the daring commando loved his M 4 assault rifle. He was the best building intervention expert in 9 Para (SF) that time and as fate would have it, he made the supreme sacrifice after elimination of terrorists in Pampore operation of JKEDI building. His story will fill your heart with tears of pride. The story also features the pain and pride of his parents Mrs Asha Gupta and mr Dev Raj Gupta and his childhood friend Shwetketu Jamwal. Reminded me of Shershah movie.

The other two stories are based on lives of Major Manish Singh titled as Love Story of a Commando and presents before the world a thrilling tale of true love of a real Para Special Forces Officer from 9 Para SF rare in today’s time. The other story features Operation Rangdori Baihk which narrates about the soldiers in that operation and the women behind them. The thrilling operation and their emotional relationships with their mothers and wives will make you nostalgic by the end of the story. truly ‘Band of Brothers’ as the story is titled.

This is a must read book for all Indian Armed forces lovers to know what it actually means to be a Para Special Forces operative and also to experience the thrill and adventure that this arm has to offer to Indian youth, from adventures of Para trooping and sky diving to mountaineering to combat diving you get a deep insight in lives of Para Special Forces officers and soldiers. The book also dispels lot of rumor, myths and legend spread across the covert SF units and Special forces soldiers and provide a true insight in their lives. An authentic glimpse. Who are Disabled Cadets?

Disabled Cadets are those young officers trainees of Indian armed forces who are getting trained to become Indian Armed Force Officers. The young officers trainees are called cadets or Gentleman Cadets. These cadets who are usually teens of 17-19 years of years are rigorously trained to face any tough situation as a soldier from crossing enemy lines, to fire weapons, to blast grenades to more. Apart from these they are also given a lot of physical training which involves rigorous physical exercises, PT and various sports. The gentlemen cadets are also trained to be a true leader who will lead their soldiers from the front at the battle field in future. So, lot many mental and psychological tests and trainings are also imparted. This process involves pushing cadets into difficult situation from sleep deprivation to jungle trainings to mass punishments and more.

Training is so rigorous that almost every soldier is injured at some level but most recover and joins back academy but Disabled Officers cadets are those who are seriously injured during such training and never recover. The disability percentage may vary like some cadet may be paralyzed and permanently wheelchair bound while other may have shoulder dislocation. Physical numbness , blindness, deafness, fracture, brain dislocation, spinal injury are some of the disabilities which a disabled cadet might have.

What happens after the cadets become disabled?

Disabled cadets are evaluated over the medical reports whether they are fit for risky Armed forces life which demands mental and physical alertness of highest level and if the medical reports says otherwise they are declared medically unfit and are boarded out on medical basis. Once discharged from hospital (usually Military hospital) They return their home where their families look after them and support them as any family stands behind its kin.

What are the entitlement of disabled cadets?

Disabled cadets are given an exgratia of Rs 9000/- monthly this amount is not categorized as ‘disability pension’ and such cadets are not entitled to the status of ‘ex-serviceman’, ECHS or any other military facility which is granted to retired or released officers. On the other hand, a recruit who may get injured on the first day of training is entitled to proper ‘disability pension’ along with the status of ‘ex-serviceman’, ECHS and all facilities that are available to released Jawan. There is also disability award based on the percentage of injury.

What are the demands of disabled cadets?

1. The disabled cadets should be given an ex servicemen status.
2. They must be covered under the ECHS scheme and all other health emoluments an officer is covered in.
3. There are a lot of appointments and posts for which the defense does private hiring be it in the administration sector, logistics, management etc, these cadets can be rehabilitated in these positions as they are qualified enough and are selected through a rigorous process.
4. There should be proper rehabilitation facilities for the medically boarded out cadets in reverence to their graduation, vocational training, mental trauma, counselling etc.
5. Lot many disabled cadets can be rehabilitated in the Ministry of Defense itself, services like Army postal service, defense estate services can easily accommodate these bright young boys and girls.

Why it is unfair not to grant these disabled cadets their rights?

The ‘Persons with Disability Act’ states that any government employee who is declared medically unfit for the service should be continued to be given complete salary, service benefits, pension etc and shall be rehabilitated according to his status which means from a government peon to an IAS officer if disabled don’t have to worry about their medical expenditure or a future and can continue to live with dignity. Though this act astonishingly does not imply on Armed Forces Officers Cadets. Even the other faujis like a recruit or trainee jawan if gets disabled is entitled for all the benefits of service including ex servicemen status but not officer cadets. It is completly unjust, unfair and unethical.

What are our responsibilities as a nation and people?

If we claim to be civilized society or a society which is humanitarian don’t you think we have utmost responsibility towards these crippled youngsters who were bright, meritorious, talented and patriotic so they chose to join Military academies instead of option for other cushy jobs? They certainly had sense of passion and duty towards their nation and people that they chose to wear uniform otherwise why will one join forces? For money or secured life there are much easier jobs. They believed in us. there is a tagline of Indian Army which is also written on their website which says ‘While you will look after the nation the nation will look after you and your kins’ this line give comfort and sense of security to our soldier that they freely do their duty but dont you think this also implies on young cadets who could not be a soldier?

Shumbham Gupta

Shubham Gupta was 19 in 2010 when he joined National Defense Academy after clearing UPSC exam and also SSB interview. He had this huge dreams of becoming a grade 1 officer who will serve his nation but it could not be fulfilled. Two years later In April 2012 during the advance stage of his training when he dived into a swimming pool his head hit the floor which caused spinal jerks and made him a quadriplegic. Now hw is 100% disabled permanently wheelchair bound with a monthly expense of Rs 40000.

Chetan Choudhary

Chetan Choudhry son of a soldier has been a topper through out his academic career. He always wanted to be a better soldier than his father and he achieved it in 2015 by qualifying TES entry which is one of the toughest entry schemes of Indian Army. During a boxing tournament his brain was dislocated and he became a quadriplegic. He was medically boarded out in 2016 and now by 2021 he is able to walk but left side is paralyzed and he can not focus on anything. He shared with me how he was able to study for 9-10 hours continuously and now if he studies more than an hour his head pains nor can he memories anything. He intends to crack UPSC exam someday but he is not sure with so many disabilities in the body.

Vickrant Raj

Ex Cadet Vickrant a Rimcolian (product of RIMC Dehradun which takes only one student form each state) and joined NDA 137 in 2016 with huge dreams in his eyes. He was going to be 4th generation fauji of a fauji family and he indeed was brightest of them all. In October 2018 he got seriously injured in a boxing tournament against a foreign cadet but he joined academy within 15 days of hospitalization only to be hit at the same spot in a football tournament which eventually ended every dream he ever saw and crushed the spirits of his family. He got up from Coma after 4 months, took 5 months to recognize his mother and after 2 years of mental, physical and financial trauma he is learning to walk and talk. This December 2020 rest of his course mates have been commissioned and are Lieutenants now.

Anunaya Chaturvedi

Anunaya Chaturvedi was student with good academic record and an NCC cadet, joined OTA Chennai in Oct 2009. She got injured during training in April 2010. She suffered long continuous hospitalization and three surgeries for neck of femur fracture. Boarded out in July 2011. Though fortunately she was able to resume studies while still walking with a crutch. Presently she is Masters in Science and Humanities, and teaches in Navodaya Vidyalaya Jodhpur. She is one of the lucky few who could get an employment.

Rony Scaria

GC Rony Scaria belonged to Kanjar Kerala. Rony had joined the academy via NCC special entry in April 2017 and was slated to pass out as a commissioned officer in the Army in March 2018. He sustained the grievous injury during a boxing competition at the academy which eventually killed him. He died.

If together as one nation ,people and society we could not support our disabled cadets it is truly a shameful. It will always be a black spot in the history of a society which claimed to be humanitarian and kind. Please support the campaign and raise awareness about them to 1.3 billion people of India. May be then something would happen as this battle continues since 1985.

Lieutenant Colonel Robert TA Kuba from Manipur’s Senapati district, son of Thuiba Angelus, was the first army officer from Maram Naga community who had joined the Indian Army through the technical background. He was a TES (Technical Entry Scheme) entry to Indian Army, so tough that you need to get minimum 70% marks in Physics, Chemistry,Maths (PCM) to be even eligible for sitting for the exam. Imagine a young boy, eldest of among eight siblings at ‘Maram’ village’ which falls in between Imphal and Kohima with big dreams in his eyes; almost impossible ones.

In 2008, Lt Col Robert was awarded the Vice-Chief of the Army Staff Commendation after his squad under his leadership as a captain completed in the prestigious Army Adventure Challenge Cup and emerged as winner.

In 2017, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, the first person among the Maram community to hold the position

He was also one of the best from his batch, an ever smiling, quiet and affectionate person as his coursemates remember. The golden boy was known as ‘Ronaldo’ of the batch. One of the coursemates shared with me

“I don’t know how to react. Extremely sad and broken. I remember Roberta holding rum glass and singing Bryan Adams. It is an unbearable loss to us and to Indian Army. RIP Brother.”

Captain Riya Nehra (retd.) was young when she got married to Captain Somesh Srivastava, a young Engineers officer in Indian Army posted at Leh on 20 October 1999. Their life was bliss,for once Riya thought this will last forever but Captain Somesh Srivastava lost his life on the line of duty exactly after 1.5 years of their marriage in a snow clearance operation in Manali- Leh sector on 4 March 2001. Life had never been same for Riya since then. From being a newly wed to a Veer Nari within a short span took toll on her spirits. Many a times she felt like giving up but her parents supported her a lot. She realised she could not insult the legacy of the bravest men she ever knew by giving up and so, just to carry on his legacy she decided to adorn the same stars once on his shoulders. It was at a time when joining Army by a woman was considered revolutionary and a Veer Nari was supposed to lead her life within the limitations imposed by society. But it did not deter her and she joined OTA and commissioned on September 2002. Today she works as business consultant with an Indian multinational outsourcing company. Her daughter is 13 year old and Riya Nehra is proud to have been leading her life with pride and dignity on her own terms than succumbing to stereotypes vanishing into shadows. Here is the complete interview of Captain Riya Nehra (retd) where she reveals various aspects of her life. 

Tell us a little something about yourself?

I am an ex- army officer on my second career stint as a business consultant. I grew up in Dehradun, a city famous for its schools and considered a hub for military training. At a young age I was exposed to the army culture, and was very inspired by it. It was purely by turn of events that I myself took a career in the army and served for almost 7 years. I am currently working with a large Indian multinational company. I am a mother to a smart 13 year old and in my free time I love to pursue my passion for creating and styling food.

Tell us about your Journey to OTA? Why did you intend to be an Army officer?

My journey to join the army came from a personal and deeper experience of having witnessed army from close quarters. As I mentioned, my growing up years I was inspired by army life living very close to the  Indian Military Academy . At a young age I fell in love with a dashing army officer and married him at an age of 21 and moved with him to the beautiful yet difficult terrain of Ladakh where I spend a year with him.  During this period, I got a first- hand experience of the tough life that our soldiers and officers lead during their service guarding national borders in difficult terrains.

After 1.5 years of marriage while I was away to give my post- graduation exams, tragedy struck us- as we received the news from his units that Capt Somesh Shrivastava had laid down his life during a snow clearance operation in Manali- Leh sector.

This tragedy shook us to the core however I felt an inner strength and decided to follow his footsteps to join the army.

Tell us a little something about your training in OTA. What all things a lady cadet has to perform to make it as an officer?

When I joined the army I had little idea of what lay ahead. Army training is a very well structured one to ensure that they prepare and train officers to be well versed and equipped to handle any situation of combat or difficulty. The training was very rigorous, and required a discipline of a very high order.

The day would begin by waking up very early, going for drill practice followed by PT/ Obstacle course training. The rest of the day would be full of different sort of trainings – Weapons training, firing, classroom sessions to understand battle tactics, military history and military laws.

Each aspect of training was very meticulously planned to ensure that we picked up the ropes of what was expected of us and slowly build our strengths- mental and physical both to prepare for a very challenging career ahead.

Where was your first posting and what challenges did you face as a Lady Officer?

My first posting was at a very large ordnance depot at Delhi where my role was to ensure storekeeping, availability and shipping of critical military stores and high altitude clothing and equipment to different units at formard locations across the country. My role was very challenging however I had great mentors and senior officers under whose guidance I learnt my work really well. I did not face any major challenges as such- our training prepares us to deal with situations. However I do realise that Lady Officers were few and one had to work really hard to earn the respect of the troops you lead- once you achieved that. I was fortunate to have learnt from every person in the course of my career.

Your most satisfying moments in Army when you thought to have done your bit?

There isn’t one experience that I would like to call out separately – as my entire career has been extremely satisfying professionally and personally. I definitely remember the day I was commissioned as a very emotional one as I felt that I had indeed achieved what I had set out to do.

“Wearing the Uniform with my husband’s star was one of the biggest achievements of my life and I still remember the moment every time I hit a roadblock to remind myself that I have come a long way.”

There have been many ups and downs in my career of 7 years during which I had the opportunity to serve at some of the most difficult locations like Arunachal Pradesh and J&K. My work was associated with provision of critical stores which contributed to the war readiness of the army units- working closely with forward locations and supporting the fighting arms and getting a first- hand exposure was very enriching to me professionally

 How did Army change you as a person, most importantly as a woman?

Army is not just a career but a way of life and my stint in Indian Army changed me as a person forever – it made me realise my innate strengths and the perseverance to stand up to any trying situations in life. My perspective to look at a challenges changed totally – something that has always been my super power all these years.

Why did you leave Army?

Being a short service officer, I completed my mandatory service period in 2007 thereafter I took an extension for another year and finally hung my uniform in Oct 2008- a very emotional moment for me again to move on to pursue a career.

 What are you doing now? How did you build your life third time over? What motivated you?

I am working in an Indian multinational outsourcing company as a business consultant with a specialization in Sourcing and procurement. Building a second career (and a third life) wasn’t easy in the beginning given I started a job with corporate amidst the recessionary times in 2009-10- I started at a level not commensurate with my years of experience but I was keen to work and took what came my way. Slowly and consistently I worked my way up and am now considered an experienced and a well -respected professional in my company managing key assignments.

 You are working from home. Tell us about your work profile.

Being a consultant provides me flexibility to work from home – this way I am able to strike a balance between my work and home and motherhood responsibilities.I also have restarted to follow my passion of many years which is food – I lover creating new recipes and styling food and often Blog and share my work through Instagram and other social media channels.

I have also had the opportunity to work with brands like Aaj Tak for food videos. I was also a top 40 contestant in Master Chef India season 6. I am also a keen writer and whenever I find time, I do pick up my pen to express.

What is your future plan? 

My future plans are to be supporting my child in her future endeavours.I also am exploring an opportunity to hone my writing skills and working on a Book concept at the moment.

“someday I also plan to set up an all- women’s kitchen wherein I can provide opportunities to next of kin of Army martyrs. “

Army is still not a conventional place for women. Do you think it is a wise career option for a young motivated girl to join Armed Forces or they should choose other sector?

Army is definitely a very good career choice for young girls today and with the recent ruling about the grant of permanent commission to Women officers, I believe the stage is now set for women to demonstrate their full potential. Army as I mentioned is a way of life hence I would encourage women to seriously consider this as one of their career choice.

What is that one thing you want to change in Army for women?

I feel army is a great organization and wouldn’t like to change anything.

“I would rather comment on the generalizations and age old patriarchal stereotype that still prevail in the society which create blocks for women planning to embark on this tough career choice.”

We need to bring up a girl to deal with much difficult situations.

You yourself is very inspiring. But who are the other women inspiring you the most?

My maternal grandmother and mother – both have been my biggest source of strength having dealt with many challenges in their own lives with courage and perseverance.

 Any message to young girls who aspire to join Army one day.

Work hard, dream big.  Army Officers are well rounded and you need work hard on your all round development- including physical & mental robustness.

Kashmir’s most wanted terrorist and chief of organisation Hizbul Mujahideen Kashmir, Riyaz Naikoo with a bounty of 12 lakh on his head was encountered by Indian Security forces on 6th May 2020. Let us first take an account of his terror activities he was directly involved in his life time.

The terrorist Riyaz Naiku has took over the terror outfit after the encounter of terrorist Zakir Musa who was the successor of Burhan Wani.Hizbul Mujahideen (HM) is designated as a Foreign Terrorist Organization by United States and European Countries. The group was formed in 1989 and is one of the largest and oldest militant groups operating in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Currently HM is led by Mohammad Yusuf Shah, also known as Syed Salahuddin who resides in Pakistan, and officially supports the liberation of Kashmir and its accession to Pakistan.

Riyaz Naikoo was Kashmir Commander of this same terrorist organisation which obviously makes him a branded terrorist,there should be no doubt about it but still I mention a few of his acts of terror just to clarify my little point which I am astonished is how ignored by mainstream media.

In past he had looted local orchard owners & farmers to collect funds for his outfit, collected booty from illicit cultivation of opium and bhang in South Kashmir.His outfit also figured in narcotrade case in jammu where a huge sum of sale proceeds was transferred to one of his contacts. He had also been involved in brutal killings of civilians branding them as police/SF informers. He was a masterminded behind the revival of Hizbul Mujahideen outfit in jammu and Kashmir and released videos-audio tapes  on number of occasions carrying Pro-Pakistan and separatist propaganda.

He had also killed many innocent individuals like Haji Ghulam Mohd Dar father of Dogripora Sarpanch 0n 2014. He did not even hesitated killing innocent truck drivers and fruit traders. He also fired On Police Bus Near Bhatpora Tokena killing of six migrant labour in Kulgam. He had also  kidnapping of constable Naseer Ahmad and looting of weapons from the residence of an ex MLA. The families of Mohi-Ud-din Dar,Javaid Akbar Khanday,Police HC Ashiq Hussain Mir who were brutally killed by Riyaz Naikoo still mourn the deaths of their beloveds.Hizbul was also responsible for the recent martyrdom of four Indian Army personnel Colonel Ashutosh Sharma, Major Anup Sood, Naik Rajesh, Lance Naik Dinesh sub-inspector Shakeel Qazi who sacrificed their lives on 3rd May 2020 when an encounter broke in Rajwar and Mawar forest areas of Chanjimulla Handwara, Kashmir.

He executed a series of attacks on policemen, Special Forces and civilians to establish his power and control. He was the most wanted terrorist of Kashmir of recent times,since long on radar of security forces bound to be killed. But do you know how the death of this terrorist who was not only threat to Indian sovereignty but also to humanity had been portrayed in National and International media. You will be astonished with their desperate attempts of humanising a terrorist like him. The sob story were started by Reuters (renowned?) for honest reporting and rest channels followed its suit. I wonder if this is honest reporting what else they are capable of. What propaganda they are hell bound to spread against India.

Reuters famous for honest reporting started it claiming ‘Maths teacher turned rebel commander’ notice how they humanise him by calling maths teacher and out righteously deny calling him a terrorist rather a rebel. Why would anyone do that,especially a news agency like Reuters.

While New York Time will never claim Osama Bin Laden to be a civil Engineer bombed twin towers they are denying to call RIyaz Naikoo a terrorists rather settle at millitant emphasising on protest and rage in Kashmir. 

AlJazeera sticks to rebel commander Riyaz Naikoo. I dare if they could call Zawahiri a rebel commander 

Tamil Guardian created a separatist leader out of a most wanted terrorist.

Can somebody ask The Washington Post which is based in a country which bombs countries,sends Special Forces and drones to kill that one terrorist which matters to them but a terrorist on Indian land is top militant commander killed by Indian troops.

The fauji menage leaves distinct patterns and this brood of people are certainly exude unconventional vibes which my dear is typical to almost every other fauji family. Just not the ‘FAUJI‘ himself, the righteous soldier but also his family,household,behaviour and patterns are different from a civilian. Here we list some nostalgic things, characteristic of every fauji household. let us know how many of these things your fauji house contains.

Brasso

Unlike their civilian counterparts, Brasso in FAUJI HOUSES are not used for brass pots rather for those stars which adorn the shoulders of their very own officer. The Brasso is unanimous commodity in every Army canteen by the way. Such is the popularity of this insignificant looking metal Polish.

Borosil

Glass only means Borosil in fauji houses. We simply don’t believe in any other brand unless it is crystal which is mostly gifted by the unit colleagues during those INFORMAL PARTIES but Borosil still will hold one corner of the party proudly; the water table.

Chocomalt/Maltova

No Bournvita or Horlicks can beat the ration wala Chocomalt which comes every month and which every army mom insist kids should drink. This Chocomalt which is essentially part of monthly ration also comes handy when mom bakes the homemade chocolate cakes in OTG.

MESS WALI COFFEE

No matter whether you had this mess wali coffee while your attachment with Armoured corps based in Ambala, Rastriya Rifles mess in Kashmir,EME workshop in Secundrabad or a Mountain brigade based in Assam the mess wali coffee,I repeat the mess wali coffee will always taste the same. That is the truth of Army Life.

When was the last time when you found any other motorbike than Royal En-field to a Fauji family with a Bike. If it has to be a bike it will be Royal en-field,No exceptions. Royal en field also tops the chart of all the bucket list of NDA IMA OTA cadets who dream to own their very own Royal en-field one day soon.

The OG blue Adidas tracksuits that everyone was always twinning in during the “evening games” The loyal companion of all the fauji’s which carefully adorn the backside of the door once the soldier comes home. The best part ? They are easily available at economic prices at CSD canteens all  across the nation.

No Officers Mess can ever be completed without the Milton Kettle Jug which keeps the tea,coffee and water hot when you need it the most. the mess wale bhaiya’s best friend Milton flask brings a whole amount of nostalgia in fauji hearts. The tinge is palpable.

The OG custard and jelly 

You never knew what mummy actually did with those Weikfield custard powder and jellies which have been integral part of fauji Rations ever. Not even the maid accepted.

These trip to nostalgia can not be completed without the special mention of Fauji gypsy which brings loads of memories bitter and sweet to every heart which is tunes to Army life. No BMW or Mercedes can ever give you the warmth and smile which the Army gypsies provide along with the special pride that is attached to it.

I know you find me in your dreams when I am not around you but trust me you always hold my heart and make fondest of all the memories when I go out on operations. I can serve my country without any fear because you are always there with your mother .You don’t know how much happiness you give me when you sent me your pictures from a Shaktimaan and I also know how your friends stared at you when you explained how Shaktimaan is just a Military truck.

I also know your new friends in your new city mocked you when you told them stories of an elephant in your backyard in Binnaguri or the picnics we had under the giant windmills in Deolali neither the Assam jungles nor chillai kalan snow in Kashmir made any sense to them but I want to tell you it should not matter to you because they are not the ones experiencing these incredible things that you have had, you were born to be different and raised unconventionally.

Your life was supposed to be an adventurous ride the moment I took you to my arms only to pass to my Commanding Officer and my other unit officers in the Military Hospital at Pathankot.

You are citizen of this great nation and you had the privilege of being raised upon every bit of it,you only should be proud of it rather seeking validation from people with limited exposure.I am also aware how you were called a spoiled brat by your Bua during family vacation that you took alone with your mom but I know you corrected her that

in the world of military brat is not a word but a badge of honour that you were ‘Born Raised and Transferred’ kid of a Soldier who always prioritised nation above you and your aspirations.

I am sorry I could not attend your last birthday as promised which your mother assured to celebrate with other unit ladies in the Officer’s Mess and hope you understand I was out with my unit far away in the desserts of Rajasthan where sun sets a temperature of 50′ The tanks and guns make integral part of my job and your civilian friends feel I am a ruthless soldier who never comes to pick you up in the school but my wallet will tell you the state of my heart,it has a little picture of you when you were a newborn. Your mother insisted how we should do a baby shoot and I am so thankful to her for this. It makes me sleep better.We have raised you (Okay,mostly your Mom has raised you) with hopes that you will hold dignity,integrity and honour as we held in our hearts. Yes, we kept you disciplined and this is precisely the reason why you are more confident in achieving goals apart from the fact that you could impress your date by your table manners but we have also (mostly me,your mother is super strict but beta I can not do anything about it) pampered you to the core.

I hope you know by now An Army family thrives over the bond of love that it carries in hearts pain,separations,conflicts that you have especially seen every Army mom dealing with are an integral part of an Army family life. 

You were born in Kashmir and now your sibling is going to be born in Chennai and as always I will not be around when the little bundle of joy would arrive soon and you are waiting eagerly for me to return back to our home, the House which your mother has decorated tastefully and you also played a great role in it. Your friends were astonished to find javelins from Nagaland, bamboo huts from Assam,paper mache balls from Kashmir, Phulkari curtains from Punjab and many more artefacts from all across the globe inside your little house which looked like a barrack from outside. While staying all across Cantonments  and repeating the same pattern of mantling and dismantling a MES accomodation into a home that no matter how shortly we live in each army accomodation we will always put heart and soul while decorating it because these are just not houses but memories.

We dont believe in life but we believe in moments. We believe in live life king size because we know how short life really can be. For us Home is wherever we are!

Army brats are most resilient of all. I take pride that you can stay in any weather, housing, environment, food and learn to make the best of everything. You have grown up that way. I also know the pictures  where you were riding on a tank earned you lot of likes but you have to understand that tank is just not a tank in our cantonment occupying one corner carelessly but the pride of a whole regiment. And you have to learn to balance the conflicts that arise now and then within you and make the right decision…always!  

At the end of my letter I’d also like to tell that you have been raised by Army parents all across the country and just like all the Army brats hold the same military essence at every different place….. singing carols, celebrating Eid and Diwali at Sarv Dharam Sthals,sharing food in Bada Khanas,leaving early for weapon or helicopter exhibition in a convoy and getting scared at every new Army Public School where the Aunty in your neighbourhood might be teaching in your class who you will be collided during every tambola night even when you tried your best to avoid her are just not unique situations but exclusive feelings. At the Passing Out Parade ceremony the brother shared hilarious tales of how their drill instructor would be confused apart from the time he will find them in their PT dress with different company batch on their collar. Even the mess butler would be confused most of the time and say  ‘Are saab khana to kha lijiye?’ (have you had your meal?) to the other brother who arrived after the other brother for mess dinners.

In all, 459 GCs (gentlemen cadets) passed out from the IMA on Saturday. The GCs included 382 Indian nationals while 77 were from friendly foreign countries.
