Bollywood ace Actor Irrfan Khan who had been admitted to the ICU of a Mumbai Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital,for a colon infection, died on Wednesday, aged 54.

He was born Saahabzaade Irfan Ali Khan in Jaipur in 1966, the son of a tyre seller, and went to drama school after his failed attempt to be a cricketer. He struggled to make headway in the film industry, despite being cast in a small role as a letter writer in Mira Nair’s 1988 Salaam Bombay! Irffan Khan’s breakthrough role came from an unlikely source: the feature debut of then-unknown British director Asif Kapadia, whose low budget samurai-esque tale The Warrior was shot in India. Released in 2002, The Warrior was selected for the prestigious San Sebastián film festival and won the Bafta award for best British film. Khan subsequently broke into mainstream Indian films, often playing cops or villains – including the title role of Maqbool, an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth set in the Mumbai underworld. More orthodox Bollywood productions followed, such as Rog and the slice-of-life musical Life in a … Metro.

He was diagnosed with neuroendocrine tumour in 2018. As news of Irrfan Khan’s hospitalisation spread on Tuesday evening, the actor’s spokesperson released a statement stating ” a statement issued on behalf of Irrfan by his spokesperson read: “Yes it is true that Irrfan khan is admitted to ICU at Kokilaben in Mumbai because of a colon infection. We would keep everyone updated. He is under doctor’s observation. His strength and courage have helped him battle and fight so far and we are sure with his tremendous willpower and prayers of all his well wishers, he will recover soon.”

Irfan Khan had also took to Twitter to express his feelings. he said “Sometimes you wake up with a jolt with life shaking you up. The last fifteen days, my life has been a suspense story. Little had I known that my search for rare stories would make me find a rare disease. I have never given up and have always fought for my choices and always will. My family and friends are with me and we are working it out the best way possible. In trying times, please don’t speculate as I will myself share with you my story within a week – ten days, when the further investigations come with a conclusive diagnosis. Till then, wish the best for me.”

Irrfan Khan was diagnosed with an neuroendocrine tumour in March 2018, soon after which he flew to London for treatment. He returned to India in February 2019 to shoot Angrezi Medium with Kareena Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia and flew back to London after a brief stay. The actor returned to India in September last year after surgery and treatment in London.Irrfan Khan’s mother Saeeda Begum also died recently at the age of 95 in Jaipur but he couldn’t travel from Mumbai due to the Coronavirus lockdown , paid his last respects to his late mother through a video conferencing session. Irrfan Khan was last seen in Angrezi Medium, which released a little over a week before the lockdown was imposed in India. The actor wasn’t part of the film’s promotions because of his health; he spoke to his fans via a video message ahead of the trailer release of the film. He has also acted in several remarkable movies like Maqbool, Paan Singh Tomar, The Lunchbox, Haider, Piku and Hindi Medium. He has also acted in Hollywood films like Slumdog Millionaire, Jurassic World, The Amazing Spiderman and Life of Pi.
